HONOLULU - The Executive Office on Aging’s Kokua Mau program
has received $25,000 from the HMSA Foundation for their efforts to
improve end-of-life care. The grant will be used to support ongoing and
new programs to provide both professionals and members of the general
public information about advance care planning, pain management and
resources in the community.
Kokua Mau’s vision is to build a lei of community support so
the people of Hawaii can die in the place of their choice, free of pain
and suffering, and in accordance with their values, traditions and
beliefs. By planning ahead and making their wishes known, people can
ensure that the end of their lives is not a time of crisis, but rather
a time of reconciliation and peace.
The Executive Office on Aging has been recognized locally and
nationally for its end-of-life care programs. In 2002 it was named a
finalist in Harvard University’s Innovation in American
Government Program, one of 15 innovative programs recognized across the
United States.
