Information about promoting food handling safety in Hawaii.
Healthy Hawai`i 2000 is a project that develops health promotion and
disease prevention objectives for the state for the year 2000. This
project is the state component of the national Healthy People 2000
initiative which has similar objectives. The goals of both national and
state initiatives are to increase the span of healthy life, reduce
health disparities, and achieve access to preventive services for all
people.
Though many people cite Hawaii as one of the healthiest states in the
union far too many of our citizens continue to suffer needlessly from
preventable health problems. Fifty percent of adults in Hawaii are
over-weight or obese, close to 20 percent are smokers and 80 percent do
not engage in regular exercise. To ensure that we are indeed the Health
State, we have strengthened our efforts through the Healthy Hawaii
Initiative to improve the overall health of residents by addressing
critical risk factors of poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and
tobacco use. The Health Hawaii Initiative funds social and
environmental change planned and carried out by community-based
organizations ranging from schools to non-profit coalitions.
The Healthy Hawaii Initiative developed the Hawaii Outcomes Institute
(HOI) in partnership with the University of Hawaii to provide the
information and skills needed for communities to improve health. HOI is
designed to be a neutral, credible resource to integrate, analyze and
share information with communities, agencies potential funders and
legislators to support informed decision-making about the health and
welfare of Hawaii's people.
The Injury Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) is the focal point of
the Department of Health for injury prevention statewide. It pursues
its vision of “A Safe Hawai‘i… from the Mountains to
the Sea” through a community-based strategy to reduce and prevent
injury. The IPCP designs, implements and evaluates injury prevention
programs; collects, analyzes and disseminates injury data; provides
technical support and training; and develops and promotes prevention
policy.
The functions of the Nutrition and Physical Activity Section are
focused on chronic disease prevention and health promotion through good
nutrition and regular physical activity.
The Branch Administration provides leadership in program assessment,
development and assurance. The Administration coordinates planning and
monitors HIV/AIDS services provided by DOH or through Purchase of
Service contracts for both HIV prevention and care for those with
HIV/AIDS.
The Hawaii State Department of Health's Tobacco Prevention and
Education Program is the official state government program addressing
tobacco control in Hawaii. It is funded by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) through
the Comprehensive National Tobacco Control Program.
